The reserve extends for 175 hectares, south of the mouth of the Sangro river, close to the coast of the trabocchi, symbol of this reserve is the Hermann's tortoise, although the reasons why it became a protected area, and of environmental importance since 1971, are due to the mixed Mediterranean scrub in which the holm oak, it is the most representative species.
Flora
In the mixed Mediterranean scrub forest we find the holm oak, the orniello, the turkey oak, and the downy oaks. Downy oak is by far the most widespread plant essence while holm oak (sporadic) it is found in compact formations only in the lower part of the slope facing the sea. It is incorrect to speak of Mediterranean scrub since we are in the presence of a mixed forest of deciduous oaks typical of the Teatro coast with the presence of holm oaks.
Fauna
The avifauna makes this reserve the starting point, for the nearby inland reserves, among nesting species, and details we remember the blackcap, the cooked eye, the warbler, the Sardinian whitethroat, the hemp, the bee-eater, the green woodpecker and the great spotted woodpecker, as well as other aquatic birds typical of the river mouth, and various species that are just passing by.
The symbol of the reserve is the land tortoise (Hermann's tortoise).
